What 5 Things Should I Do To Prepare For My New Home?

Category: Step 4: Get Home | Tags: DLP, home handover, VP

Ah, moving into your new home sounds extremely exciting and fun until the day actually arrives. You walk in, saw how bare and empty your new home is, and wonder, where on earth should you start? Packing up all your things right away to move in? Cleaning the house? Unloading your 10,000 boxes of clothes? Nope! First of all, let us take a deep breath and look at these 5 steps that are going to make moving into your new home a breeze.

1. Inspect-Ur House

If there’s one thing you should be completely OCD about, it’s checking your new home for defects. It’s important to identify your defects and have them rectified within the Defect Liability Period (DLP) to prevent any repercussions in the long run. It’s going to help you tremendously in the future. So get your Defect Search Starter Kit ready, hire your best team (made out of your family members or friends) and start the hunt! Find out what you’ll need in your Search Kit right here!

2. Lock It Down

It’s time you change your locks and reset your alarm system for your new home! Security is important and so are you! You can always get the locks changed after the defect work is completed.

3. Show Off Your New ‘dress

Unless you’re hiding from the (in)law, you would want your friends and family to know that you’ll be relocating. Otherwise, they might end up surprising the wrong people if they decide to pop by for a visit or you might miss out on the lovely goodies they’ve sent to your old address. So let them know! But besides letting your contact list know, don’t forget about these other 8 people you definitely need to update.

4. Sweep Them Off Their Feet

We love nothing more than a clean home. Though the developers would usually clean the place before handing the keys over to you, you can also opt for a cleaning service to sweep it up right before you unload those boxes. It should cost you roughly around RM100 for 4 hours. But if you’re up for cleaning it all on your own with no extra help because you are an independent adult, set up an area with all the supplies and tools that you’re going to need to get the job done. Get a checklist of buckets, brooms, mops, a vacuum, different types of cleaners for each surface, and a healthy supply of rubber gloves!

5. Baby, Got Packed

Once you’ve Marie Kondo-ed your old home and have decided what to bring along and what to leave behind, it’s time to create a moving inventory! Organize your belongings according to your rooms so that it would be much easier to find the things after a couple of days and don’t forget to mark those boxes! Next, get in touch with movers who have the equipment and manpower to help you carry those heavy boxes. A rough estimated cost would be RM900 for a 5-tonne lorry and 3 movers to help carry your items! But bear in mind, the cost will also vary depending on your location! So give a few house movers a call before settling on one.

And that’s it! Happy moving and all the best settling in! Some of your greatest memories are about to begin!
